How Well Do You Know Criminal Law?

Sure, you know what's illegal and what's not. You know how to avoid breaking the law. But do you know the technicalities that can get your case dismissed in court? Do you know what kind of evidence is allowed in your defense and what isn't? Do you know how to effectively cross-examine a witness? If the answer to these questions is no, then you shouldn't be considering defending yourself in court. When a criminal case gets to court, innocence doesn't matter as much as experience with criminal law does. You need an experienced lawyer to help you defend yourself. In this blog, I'll share experiences that can help you understand what is going to happen in court and how to assist in your own defense. But the most important piece of advice I can give you is this: don't go to court without a lawyer.

5 Thigns to Consider Before You Choose a Legal Services Provider

It can be both confusing and overwhelming when you need help with a legal matter. There are so many providers from which to choose that it's difficult for the average layperson to pick the one most appropriate for their needs.

However, there are a few qualifiers that should be considered that may assist in the decision on choosing the right provider for your situation.

Experience

A provider may have advanced degrees from the most prestigious law schools, but lack real world experience in the application of their studies. While educational experience is usually sufficient for assistance with legal documents and similar matters, practice makes perfect in the complex interactions present in the courtroom.

Specialties

Specialists perform the same functions in legal services as in the medical field. While a family medicine practitioner can provide adequate diagnosis and treatment for basic health issues, a specialist is required for more complex cases within a specific field of treatment.

Legal services providers that focus on specific areas of the law will be more familiar with lesser known aspects of the laws that affect these types of cases.

Background

The longevity of a provider's presence in the area can determine their familiarity with the local court system, the actors within the system, and the demographics of the local population. Extensive knowledge of local statutes, past interaction with judges and prosecutors in the area, and familiarity with the potential jury pool can all contribute to a successful outcome to a legal challenge.

Fees

Some providers charge by the hour for legal services, while others may provide a flat rate for specific services that cover all of their fees until the case is completed. Many providers who specialize in personal injury cases accept a percentage of the proceeds if they win a case.

While this type of fee may be more costly than hourly or flat rate costs, this arrangement requires no up-front payment and waiving of all fees if the case is unsuccessful.

Personality

Personal interaction is an essential component in legal matters, so a consumer should choose a provider with whom they are comfortable. While most providers of legal services must be at least somewhat due to the nature of their business, there are different personality types in all professions.

A consumer of legal services can usually determine their comfort level with a provider during the initial consultation. Whether a provider is more gregarious or reserved, the consumer should never feel rushed or overwhelmed during the consultation. If so, they should choose another provider.
